What’s the Future of the Internet? Exclusive Interviews

From social media to mobile banking or the cloud and newly emerging Internet of Things, it’s hard to imagine daily life without the internet. Today, slightly less than half (49.6%) of the people on earth are connected while just a couple short decades ago that number was at less than 1%.

When you start to examine the rapid expansion of the internet and explosion in the variety of devices we use to interact with it, a few interesting questions are raised.

  • As virtual reality technology like google glasses progress, how will the way we interact with the internet change?
  • As wireless technology like WiFi hotspots continue to advance, how will the way we get our internet change?
  • Will there come a time when internet connectivity is seamless and you’re essentially connected everywhere?

Looking to find the answers to those questions and more we asked a group of industry experts…

What’s the future of the internet?

Here’s what they had to say…

Ross Andrew Paquette, Founder, Chairman & CEO of Maropost

“The internet of the future is more than a collection of sites; it’s a curated experience. Every ad you see, every article you’re recommended, will be carefully selected for you, using your browsing history to enhance your browsing experience.

But this is nothing new, with the recent emergence of multi-channel marketing and lookalike audience targeting, we’ve already seen the beginnings of this intimate era of the internet. As predictions and recommendations get smarter, we’ll stop seeing a single internet, and start seeing an endless series of individualized internets.”

Dave Evans, Co-founder & CTO of Stringify

“Driven by the laws of technology and exponential technological advances, the next phase of the Internet will be quite different. Our expectations of speed and immediacy will be refined by advances in wireless technologies such as 5G, and new exotic forms of communications such as quantum communication.

The Internet will reshape itself to become the solid basis for the Internet of Things (IoT), but this is more than the Internet we know today, one rich with intelligence, personality, and a proactive understanding of need. Many factors are now in play that will make this possible. Connectivity of everyday things will become ubiquitous, seamless, and affordable. Rather than noticing that something is connected, you will notice when something isn’t. Connectivity of everything will simply be an expectation.

Raw connectivity will be antiquated, all things will be connected to rich sources of intelligence and to one another, creating a powerful global intelligence.”

Kean Graham, CEO of MonetizeMore

“The future of internet advertising will be hyper relevant to the viewer and will come from multiple new sources. Advertising will show via digital maps, augmented and virtual reality technology. While the sources of technology will increase, the relevancy will also increase so the ads will seem less intrusive. Views towards advertising will become less pessimistic because advertising will offer more value than ads today.

In the future, ads will actually make reliable suggestions that are relevant to the audience. Laws will be stronger on digital advertising in terms of privacy and legitimacy of the products and messages that they push. Advertisers will still be able to target via aggregated stats, however, their big data algorithms will be much more complex and effective for targeting niche groups in a timely manner. False advertising laws will be stronger and transparency of product quality via crowdsourcing and friend reviews will bring the best products to the top of the advertising heap.”

Bradley Shaw, President of SEO Expert Brad Inc.

“Internet connectivity will be permanent and seamless. We have been “connecting” to the Internet in numerous ways, from the aged old dialing up to the seconds-long process of entering a Wi-Fi password. I expect this will change as we move into the next phase of Internet usage.

Eventually, connectivity will be constant and streamlined to the point where no individual “connection” is needed. Universal Internet is slowly coming to fruition, and overlap between systems may establish a layer of redundancy that prevents worries of service outages or connection issues.”

David Cox, CEO & Founder of LiquidVPN

“The future of the Internet is being influenced by many external forces. Right now there are three schools of thought when it comes to consumer data. I suspect as the Internet evolves we will see one of these three models adopted. The Americans have been de-regulating how consumer data is handled in favor of businesses. An example of that is the recent vote in Congress to allow ISPs to track and sell customers data. China is trying to get more access to consumer data and the EU is trying to keep consumers data private by introducing regulations like the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation)

In terms of how the Internet works. We are going to see AI fundamentally change the Internet in very dramatic ways. As AI becomes more robust and accessible e-commerce websites will implement AI bots that customers can interact with to ask questions about products featured on the website much like how you or I might ask a Best Buy employee about a product we see in the store.”

Stephen Gibson, Founder of Vyteo

“The internet is on its way to becoming as corralled and choreographed as the TV channels we watch. The sense of freedom we enjoyed in its early days will be gone. All the sites we visit will be owned by interconnected business interests who will cultivate the content we watch into its highest marketing potential.”

Felix Winstone, Managing Director at Talkative

“In 10-15 years, the internet will have real time communications fully embedded in all devices. Specific devices to make phone calls will be a thing of the past. You will be able to initiate a call within a website, an app, a car, anything with an internet connection. Calls will be globally free. Instead of telephone numbers, users will most likely be identified via email or some other digital ID.”

Herb Zien, CEO of LiquidCool Solutions

“The Internet of Things will segue to Edge Computing. IoT has us connected in more ways than ever before, but will move over for edge computing. Computing on the edge will provide artificially intelligent objects with vast amounts of processing power with each own mini data center.

Air-cooling will also become obsolete, and immersion liquid cooling that requires no fans and no ambient cooling will take its place. This means the ruggedized servers can live anywhere, and almost all of the rejected energy can be used as a source to heat water and / or the building making it sustainable.”

  • Thanks for including me on the list! Definitely agree with many of the others as far as internet connectivity, increased artificial intelligence, and hyper relevancy.
